Mecklenburg County Hopes to Have POSSE System Back Online This Week

In the wake of last week’s cybercrime attack, Mecklenburg County is continuing to make progress on restoring permitting systems to full functionality. LUESA is running tests on the POSSE system today, and pending those results, is hoping to have it back up and running by tomorrow or Thursday.

LUESA director Ebenezer Gujjarlapudi told REBIC today he is confident that no plans or review comments were lost during the hack, so the department should be able to pick up where they left off once everything is back online.

Code Enforcement has been averaging about 1,000 inspections a week since the system collapsed, so they don’t expect there will be much (if any) of a backup once the system returns to normal. In addition, the County says they’ve had a number of on-schedule reviews completed this week using the paper process, and once the system is back up, they’ll contact all customers in the queue to let them know how they’ll be proceeding with their scheduled reviews. Again, they seem to expect a minimal disruption.

Charlotte Architecture Firm Finalizes Merger with Progressive AE

A Charlotte architecture and interiors firm has finalized its merger with Progressive AE.

ai Design Group, which announced the merger last summer, has formally adopted its new name of Progressive AE, effective today. The merger will result in expanded service lines in the Charlotte market, including new engineering services. The local leadership team of principals Wes JonesKim Marks (NAIOP Charlotte member) and Ryan Doherty will remain intact, according to Progressive AE, with Jones serving as managing principal of the Charlotte office and Marks appointed as the firm-wide workplace practice leader.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Charlotte is the second office for Progressive AE, which is based in Grand Rapids, Mich.

Concord to Host Drop-In Session on Proposed Land Use Plan

The City of Concord invites the public to get the first glimpse into the policies and maps that will guide the development of the community over the next 10-15 years. The 2030 Land Use Plan public input session is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 10 CFA Village Suite 75 located at 280 Concord Parkway N.

With the assistance of Tindale Oliver, Planning and Neighborhood Development staff have been working to update the City's Land Use Plan to provide the framework for land use and development through the year 2030. The existing Land Use Plan, referred to as the 2015 Land Use Plan, was created in 2004 and updated in 2007.

The process is updating a land use map and supporting text document that contains data, specific goals, and policy recommendations focused on land use and development. The final plan will also guide City officials as they develop future budgets, plan infrastructure and other services, make important land use decisions, and revise current policies within the Concord Development Ordinance.

On September 19, 2017, NAIOP Charlotte hosted a breakfast that discussed Moving people and products into, around and outside of Charlotte with bikes, automobiles, trucks, airports, light rail, and trains.  It all impacts the future growth and development of our region.  This breakfast discussion included diverse perspectives on local, state and national policy and the priorities and challenges for the next 25 years.  Are their tools to help move the priorities forward?  How does the 2040 Transportation Plan, managed lanes, and rail impact your business and the future of development?  And, how can our industry help ensure good mobility in our region?  

A special thank you to our panel, moderated by Tracy Dodson and including Ned Curran, Northwood Office, and former NCDOT Chair, David Howard, NC Department of Transportation and former Charlotte City Council Member, John Lewis, CATS.

  • North Carolina has the second largest road system in the US (second to Texas) because there are no county-managed roads

Senate Approves Extension of National Flood Insurance Program

On Thursday, September 7, the United States Senate voted to pass a three-month extension of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). The House of Representatives is expected to pass the legislation on Friday, September 8, 2017, and the President is expected to quickly sign the bill into law later in the day.

This legislation ensures that the NFIP will not lapse on September 30, 2017, and will be extended until December 8, 2017.

2017 Building NC Awards Nominations

Business North Carolina is seeking nominations for its annual Building North Carolina awards, which will be featured in their November issue. Submit your suggestions on the most important commercial real-estate projects completed in the state between July 1, 2016 and June 30, 2017 and the developer who has had the biggest impact on the industry.

Building North Carolina winners will be selected based on design, innovation and community impact in such categories as best public project, commercial project, renovation, and overall design. Submitted projects will also be considered for a Carolinas AGC 2017 Pinnacle Award, bestowed at its annual convention in January.

Entries should be submitted no later than Aug. 22.

Mecklenburg County Code Enforcement Releases Results of Customer Satisfaction Survey

During Tuesday's meeting of the Building Development Commission (BDC), Ed Gagnon, a consultant with Customer Service Solutions, Inc. provided a presentation detailing the results of a recently conducted customer satisfaction survey.  Responses indicated those surveyed were generally more pleased than they had been during a similar survey conducted in 2014.  However, the top areas of concern (ability to reach the right person, timeliness of permit request process, and timeliness of inspections) are the same as they were three years ago and appear to be more significant concerns.  For a summary of the results, please click the following link:
